Many of us will recall having hydrogen peroxide solution applied to badly grazed knees, etc. when we were kids. It tingled and it fizzed, but we knew it was doing us good. Our parents used it because they understood it was an effective way to disinfect a wound, and that remains just as true today. But what exactly is hydrogen peroxide?

Basically, as the name suggests, it’s a compound composed of hydrogen and oxygen (chemical formula H202). For medical applications, it is used in the form of a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. It must be diluted in this way to be beneficial to humans. Stronger concentrations of hydrogen peroxide are used in industrial settings.

What Hydrogen Peroxide Solutions does Joya Carry?

At Joya Medical supplies, we stock Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 10 and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 20. The difference between them is that Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 10 contains 3% hydrogen peroxide, whereas Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 20 contains a stronger concentration of 6% hydrogen peroxide. Medical professionals will usually know which strength they require of specific situations. For example, they may feel that Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 20 (6%) is necessary for treating a particular infection.

Both of our hydrogen peroxide solutions are manufactured by Perrigo Australia, a trusted provider of “quality, affordable, self-care products” to the Australasia region, as well as of hospital supplies for more than 25 years.

Medical Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide solutions can be used to treat wounds (cuts, scrapes, burns) and ulcers. They have been shown to be effective in killing bacteria, viruses and yeasts. These solutions can also be used to sterilise surfaces and/or medical equipment.

Our Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 10 and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 20 products are aimed at those needing to cleanse and/or remove damaged tissue or foreign matter – like the bits of gravel we all remember from childhood spills! – from wounds and ulcers.

Safety Considerations with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide, whether as Hydrogen Peroxide 10 Solution, Hydrogen Peroxide 20 Solution or in some other form, should not be ingested or injected. Nor should it be irrigated under pressure or into closed body cavities. Do not mix your hydrogen peroxide with any other chemicals or returned unused portions to the bottle. Ideally, you should wear protective gloves when using it.

Adverse effects (like skin irritation) from the application of 3% or 6% hydrogen peroxide are rare, but if they do occur, cease using it to treat that patient.

How Should I Apply Hydrogen Peroxide Solution?

Two common ways to gently apply your Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 10 or Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 20 to a wound are with good, old-fashioned cotton balls or with single-end cotton tip applicators, which are designed for just that sort of thing.
